Registering Online

by Katie on December 2, 2010

The days of classic registries containing fine china and matching “His” and “Her” towels is over. With online shopping becoming increasingly popular on a daily basis, many soon-to-be-wedded couples are choosing to register at various online stores for many non-traditional items.

Now couples can register for books to complete their home libraries, new computers, and hand-thrown dishes all with a few quick clicks of the computer mouse. Not only are they able to register at large department stores without the hassle of walking through the store with a barcode gun in hand (I can say, from personal experience, registering in a store isn’t all it’s cracked up to be – we ended up more stressed than giddy from a shopping high), but they are able to choose from more unique stores to fulfill the needs of basic newlywed tasks, such as home decorating or remodeling.

For remodeling plans, many couples are even choosing to register for the larger items online, which multiple family members and friends can purchase together. One type of registry that is growing in popularity is that similar to the one found on Bathroomvanity.com. With such a huge selection of bathroom vanities, bathroom mirrors, and cabinetry, couples are able to choose items that may accent or complete their new home which they may not be able to afford otherwise.

Not only do online registries provide couples with greater options, but they are also relatively easy for shoppers. The couple can create a wish list of items for registry online, which can be emailed to all guests (though that doesn’t mean you should). The list will include all the information for purchasing items online, which means shoppers can also avoid department stores. Friends and family interested in purchasing a gift off a couple’s online registry are able to do so with ease and usually without having to worry about the cost of shipping. In fact, more shoppers are inclined to shop online to avoid the long lines and elbow-to-elbow packed stores.

So before you run to the nearest department store to register for a set of plates or kitchen appliances, consider looking at a few of the more unique online registry ideas. With nearly every type of retailer available online these days, couples have endless possibilities and can find everything their new home may need – from bathroom fixtures to yoga equipment – in one or two websites – saving themselves precious wedding planning time.

Needs more tips for registering? Here are a few things I wish I had known before we registered.

- Some things that you find online can’t be purchased in stores, and vice versa. Just keep that in mind as you look through each item.

- Unless you’re obsessed with a single department store, chances are you won’t be able to find everything you want in a style you like in one place. Count on registering in at least two places.

- Not everyone will buy you something off of your registry. So, no matter where and how you register, if the number of gifts they suggest you register for is three times the number of guests you have, don’t listen. Register for what you think you need and/or want, but don’t put things on your list just for the sake of adding things your registry.

- It’s entirely possible that you will get half (or just bits and pieces) of any sets you register for. For instance, we registered for a whole table of new plates, bowls, etc. In the end, the only pieces of that set we got was a set of six dinner plates.

- Along with the tip above, don’t feel like you need to get new anything just for the sake of having new stuff! If you or your fiance already has a set of glasses that you love, use them. Leave new ones off your registry.

Storymix Media

by Katie on October 8, 2010

Hey all!! It’s been forever since I posted last (W-S post not included). I’m getting hitched next Saturday (10/16) and things have been quite hectic.

I wanted to drop in and tell you about something we’re trying out for our big day – Storymix Media. Brandon actually connected me with “their people” just a few days ago, so I was a little hesitant to sign up. But, since our videographer is my fab-but-still-in-training cousin, I figured, “why not?”.

Storymix has unique photo and video services designed for couples tying the knot. We are going to use their Flip Wedding and Guest Memories products and I’m really interested in seeing how it all turns out. If all goes well, I think it could be a seriously awesome service for couples to consider, especially if a pricey videographer doesn’t fit in the budget.

They supply Flip cams for three days, that any of our friends, family members or guests, (or even us) can use to shoot footage throughout the weekend. Then they professionally edit it into a 20-30 minute highlight movie on DVD. How cool?!

Their “Guest Memories” package is a simple way for us to capture all those moments our guests have (but we’ll miss). We are going to provide the unique URL to our guests, and they can upload their picture files without needing a username or password. Then we pick our favorite 50 photos and Storymix creates a custom DVD slideshow. Everything ends up on an online gallery so anyone can download any photo or video file they want for free (this is probably my favorite feature!).

Anywho, after things settle down, I’ll do a review to let you know how it all turned out! And hopefully I’ll be able to share the video, too! ;)

Have you used Storymix Media? Tell us what you think!!

Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the details of wedding planning that we forget the whole reason we’re getting married – the fact that we’ve found “the one” we want to spend forever with!

Williams-Sonoma wants to hear your “The Moment I Knew” story! They are sponsoring a $150 gift card giveaway to one WeddingFanatic reader who shares her (or his) own super sweet (or funny) story! How fabulous!

To kick things off, I’m going to share my own “moment I knew” story. I hope you’ll enjoy (and laugh with me as I tell it :P ).

I met Brandon many, many, many years ago at the ripe old age of six. It was the first day of Kindergarten and as luck would have it, we were seated at the same table of eight. Okay, so maybe it was less luck and more a matter of fact that our last names were close together when put in alphabetical order, which is how the seating chart worked at the time.

Throughout the first few weeks of school, Brandon continually made me laugh by saying funny things and dancing to and singing “Father Abraham” – a totally awesome song where you end up moving every part of your little Kindergarten self – right arm, left arm, right leg, left leg, head – by the time you get to the last verse.

I knew then, at the moment I realized I wanted to sing “Bicycle Built for Two” to him, that he was the one for me. (Thanks for teaching that song to me, mom!) But of course, neither of us were into serious relationships at the time. ;) I sang it to him anyway, and I’m pretty sure he just thought I was a weirdo.

Fast-forward to the 8th grade. Both fans of AIM, we started chatting every night, for hours at a time. Finally, he “asked me out” (via IM of course). I told him, “Well, I’ll have to ask my parents. Let me get back to you on that.” I know I know, please try to contain your laughter…. The rest is pretty much history.

And though we’ve been together for almost nine years, I still have “the moment I knew” moments all the time – things he does, things he says, when we dream and laugh together – and they always remind me why he’s the man I love and want to start a family with (though the thought of actually having kids still terrifies me…just a bit ;) .

NOW, for the giveaway details!

Here are the rules for the $150 gift card giveaway for Williams-Sonoma –
1. Sign up for Williams-Sonoma’s Bridal Registry. If you’re already registered with W-S, add another item to your registry to enter and include said item in your comment.
2. Leave a comment on this post telling us that you’ve registered (or added an item), and share your own “Moment I Knew” story (it doesn’t need to be as long as the one above!). Bonus: Get an extra entry by posting a link to your public registry in your comment.
3. The contest ENDS Monday, September 27th, 2010 at 12:00am CST. The winner will be announced (and emailed) on Tuesday, September 28th.

David’s Bridal Launches Invitation Line

by Katie on September 17, 2010

I think David’s Bridal is pretty much a household name by now. If you’re a bride, there is no doubt in my mind that you have heard of the company! They have completely changed the process of shopping for and purchasing wedding dresses in more ways than one. Not only are David’s dresses affordable, but they are available all over the United States (and abroad).

But today, they are almost a one-stop shop for brides that don’t want to run around dealing with [sometimes] unnecessary details. In fact, recently they launched their own line of wedding invitations and I have to say, I’m pretty impressed. They have quite a few to look though and a range of styles. Best of all? They stay true to their reasonable price mentality and keep things simple by offering a good, but not overwhelming, number of customizable options.

Check out a few of my faves!

Of course, they have more traditional selections too, and even earth friendly options for all the green brides out there. Sort by price, color, and designs and themes. Prices start at $60 for 100, perfect for brides on a (tight) budget. That’s definitely worth looking into, right?!

I have been madly in love with Prismera for quite some time now and when I saw these, I thought they were beyond worthy of a post. Not just because the fashion illustrations are just marvelous (because they are!), but because they highlight an issue that is near and dear to a lot of us – breast cancer.

Prismera founder and designer says, “I wanted to create a set of prints for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, representing women in various stages of life. While breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women, early detection is still key in survival. My hope is that these prints will serve as a daily reminder to get regular screenings and to honor and support those who are actively involved in finding and delivering cures for breast cancer.” So awesome!

The prints come in three designs: Shirley, Nancy and Betty. Each print is printed with Epson archival inks onto 100% cotton rag paper. The pricing for the prints is: $20 for a 5×7” print or $46 for a 11×14” print. 30% of proceeds will benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The prints are now available at PrismeraDesign.com.

Having a backyard means you have a certain amount of space available, but it can still be turned into a really nice wedding venue. You can have anything from a luxury wedding to a simple ceremony with friends, right there in your backyard. It all just depends on how much money and time you’re willing to spend. But the simple fact that you’re using your own land for the wedding can save you a lot of money, which you can either spend on an enhanced ceremony, other wedding-related items, or on improving your home – or in just about any way you choose. So if you like the idea of a backyard wedding, here are some ways to go about it.

1. Space can be crucial.
When you plan a wedding in your backyard, you need to consider how space you have to work with. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have a dream wedding right in your backyard, it just means you have to keep the space-to-people ratio just right. Don’t be afraid to get creative and use your porch, deck, or any other areas in your back yard. You might have more space than you think when you use more than just an open grassy area.

2. Consider how the weather could affect your plans.
Weathermen are traditionally considered untrustworthy, but that’s only because the weather can change in a moment. So even if forecasts are ‘sunny’ for your special day, ensure that your guests and your beautiful arrangements don’t get ‘all wet’ on your wedding day by having a back up plan (or two)!

3. Consider introducing a theme.
Thinking of a theme is the easy part – then you need to find all the decorations that will make it a reality. But accomplishing that need not be a dreaded task – instead, it can be lots of fun, especially if you involve your loved ones. With a little touch of romance and togetherness, you’ll find that creating a theme for your wedding together makes it even more unique and special. Adding all the details that are uniquely “you” will truly make your wedding your own.

4. Careful planning is key to a successful event.
A lot of people set up the main details for a wedding and lose sight of those little things that can make or break an event. Others become so caught up in settling every little detail in person that they stress themselves out and ruin the beauty of the event. A wedding is a once in a lifetime event – you want to enjoy it, not spend it worrying about relatively minor things. The solution, of course, is to delegate. People love helping with weddings, so give them a chance. One friend can help with guest parking; another friend or family member can help set up the decorations. Someone else can handle the power backups, while another can call up a service in the region to make sure you have enough restrooms for your guests.

5. Allocate a part of your budget to long-term improvements.
When you choose to have your wedding in your backyard, you might end up saving some big bucks (perhaps as much as around a third of your total budget for the wedding). These savings can be used in a number of ways. One great idea is to pour some money back into your house and yard. Some of the things you could invest in include professional landscaping, outdoor furniture, or even some best selling wooden porch swings if your house and yard allow for them. In addition to these, consider giving your lawn some TLC since it will likely be used during the big day!

If your yard is in a state of disrepair, some lawn and yard work is crucial. Lay new sod or plant some grass seed. Mow regularly, and a few days before the event (NOT the morning of) so you don’t have bits of grass sticking to peoples’ clothes, which can be irritating and unsightly.

6. The right plants can make a big difference.
When you groom your yard for your wedding, don’t forget to plant some blooming plants. The lovely colors and fragrance of the right flowers can provide the perfect backdrop to your special day. Try to arrange a mix of flowers that are bright in color and that have a lovely scent. Watch out for any flowers that are known to attract bees or other annoying bugs!

7. Ensure that you have the right music and that your event is well lit.
Music for your wedding calls for a mix of music and music systems. First, you need a well selected play list that can play over speakers all over the yard. This sets up a romantic ambiance for your event. If you’re having a tented reception, a live band or DJ can be a nice touch, especially since they usually bring their own equipment!

Keep lighting subtle to create a romantic, yet natural vibe. Use floating candles in a pond (or pool), yard lamps around paths and walkways, and strings of lights over any seating areas to create a warm glow.

8. Save even more money.
How do you save further? You might be surprised at how much you can save with a few financial tips and tricks. For example, pay close attention to items that you can buy before the wedding and give to charities afterwards, and get back the entire price as a tax deduction. Use vases from your own home, or borrow them from another recent bride, to create centerpieces and other arrangements. Consider having h’orderves instead of a sit down dinner – this will save you money on rentals and food, and save you a lot of space.

9. Take precautions against hot weather.
Taking a few simple precautions against hot weather will make your guests love you. You don’t want them getting all hot and flustered! Cooling fans are an excellent way to beat the heat, and if you want to go in for something more sophisticated, try for a flash-evaporation system.

10. Remember the day!
There are a lot of things that you can do to help you remember your wedding, and all the little moments that helped to make it special. One of the very best ways, of course, is to have someone take lots of photographs. One thing that you could do, that is both inexpensive and rather well, is to put a good camera (either yours or a friend’s) in the hands of a family member who is a good photographer. This can work really well, especially if you have an amateur photographer in your group of friends! If you have the budget, hire a professional instead. Either way, make sure you have someone there to document the whole day!

Lovely Looks from Priscilla of Boston

by Katie on September 10, 2010

We’re big fans of bridal style here at WeddingFanatic, especially when it comes to The Dress! We spend hours googling over silhouettes, fabrics, and sparkly details. One great place to find your bridal style inspiration is by clicking through the gorgeous wedding dresses of Priscilla of Boston.

Priscilla is home to a team of creative designers that produce stunning looks season after season. The company, which has been in business since the 1940s, was started by Priscilla Kidder in a single shop that offered unique handmade gowns. Priscilla was chosen to design Grace Kelly’s dress when she married Prince Rainier of Monaco, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Though the company has grown to include the work of multiple designers and expanded to many locations country wide, their reputation has stayed the same. They continue to offer modern looks in lux fabrics and trimmings that many a bride would give their left arms to wear.

Check out some of the designs we love from each of the collections!
