Bow a la Heel

What do you think of the bridal shoe “back-of-heel” bow? I like it, but is it too reminiscent of the bridal gown “butt bow”?

I like them in black (though this picture isn’t great for showing off the bow). They would be perfect for a rehearsal dinner or a ladies night out on the town.

Favorite Things : Pashminas

Whether you get them for your bridesmaids or for every one of your guests, these make the perfect little “wedding extra”. If it’s chilly and you’re having an outdoor wedding, send your ‘maids down the aisle in matching or coordinating colors and styles, or tie them around the ceremony chairs with a little note inviting guests to use them. Or, fold some up and tie with a ribbons and notes, placing them in a chic container, telling guests to snuggle up under one. Oh the possibilities!

DIY Wedding Cake

Looking to save some money on your wedding? Here’s a video about making your own wedding cake. Cakes can be a fairly big expense and if you’re good in the kitchen* you could probably save a bundle by baking up your own! This video might start you on the right track…

*WeddingFanatic doesn’t recommend baking wedding cakes for friends unless you’re a professional. :-)

Sunny Yellow & Peaceful Blue

I think these two colors are a happy mix. A bride-to-be that I know is thinking about using this color combo - I love it. (Pardon the ugly boarder…I love polyvore and I love our blog, but sometimes to two just don’t mix well).

Quick Tip

I saw this post over at Wedding Scoops (a recent blogroll addition) that is SUCH a great example of what the right venue choice can do for you.

Notice the tables aren’t full of flowers or overly fancy place settings. Yet the room overall seems elegant, classy, inviting, and very upscale. Notice that the drapes and the Chivari chairs are similar in color, as well as the sconces and overhead lighting. The walls, tables and linens are very complimentary with the other elements in the room. Just adding clean glass and some low floral arrangements really pull the room together.

The best part of all is that much of what you see in the room is likely to have come from the venue itself, meaning the people holding the event didn’t have to rent additional chairs, linens, etc.

So! A few things to keep in mind when you’re looking for a venue and you want to save some change:
-Finding a place that doesn’t need lots of “extras”, though it may cost a bit more in the beginning, may very well save you money in the end.
-Working with the existing elements of the room takes less work in making the space look complete (and you’ll spend less money trying to convert the entire space into something that looks totally different).
-Don’t be afraid to ask what’s included in your package. Perhaps you can use alternative chairs for just a few more dollars or even for free.

Wedding Planning Marathon

Have a super busy schedule? Or perhaps you’re planning on having your wedding out of town. Or maybe, just maybe, you’re working with multiple people’s schedules. Whatever the case may be, you may need or want to participate in a “wedding planning marathon”, as I like to call them. What exactly is it? A single day or two that is filled completely with wedding planning (I know, what could possibly be better?)!

So how do you pull this off? Here are a few simple tips to make it easy.

1. Work smart. Schedule appointments with just enough time between to travel. And, if you’re heading someplace new, make sure you know how to get there in advance so you’re not late.

2. Map it out. There is no use in traveling all around town with gas prices so high! Map out all of the stops you’ll be making and try to schedule your appointments in an order that requires you to drive the least. You’ll save time and money!

3. Be prepared. When you call to set up your appointment, ask about what you’ll be talking about and doing (for example, with your baker, will you simply be discussing cake shape, or will you be tasting samples?). And, bring all the necessary items you’ll need (lists of people, color swatches, etc.).

4. Don’t forget to eat! If you plan it right, you might just be able to finagle a free meal (schedule you’re caterer’s tasting around lunch or dinner time). But even if you can’t work that out, a day like this can be exhausting, so be good to yourself!

5. ENJOY! Working with vendors to help you make your big day a hit can and should be fun and enjoyable! Roll with the proverbial punches and try to have a good time, even if all you want to do is just get married. ;)

And the flower girl carried…

When it comes to flower girl dresses, the choices are fairly few. You’ve got the fluffy, full skirted white dress, or a similar style in a color that coordinates with your chosen wedding hues and shades. So unless you plan to make you own (always a fabulous option in my book), it seems you’re somewhat limited in what your little lady will wear.

But, there isn’t anything that says she has to carry a basket full of petals down the aisle! Perhaps she shouldn’t carry one because it would be silly (if rose petals aren’t allowed in the aisle of your church, for example). So here is your chance to really get creative. Some of our favorite ideas can be found below.

Flower Ball / Pomander

From Better Homes and Gardens

Here is a little something your little someone can hold with one or both hands, or even wrap around her wrist. Perfect for the tiniest of flower girls.

Lantern

From Reigning Gifts

Use with a real candle or a battery powered one, depending on the maturity of you flower girl. This would work wonderfully in a rustic setting or in the evening.

Parasol

From Australia Entertains

Fabulous for an afternoon or outdoor gala, spring or summer. The fabulous thing about this number is that it can be use in many styles: rustic, Asian influence, elegant, classic, modern, and more.

Fan

From White Aisle

Paint your monogram on a fan and send your flower girl down the aisle casually holding this little pretty. If she is shy she my try to cover her face, which could either make for some cute pictures or a flower girl who can’t see where she’s going!

And a few more ideas:
-a Bible, cross, or some other significant religious symbol
-a single stem of a flower in your bouquet
-a candle, if she is old enough and you use a wax drip protector
