March 19, 2010, will always hold a spot on that top-10-best-days-of-your-life list. It was the day when Seth proposed to me. Seth got down on one knee at the site of our first date, Tiger Plaza on the campus of the University of Missouri. For the big moment to happen at our alma mater — where we met and fell in love — was perfect. The ring was fantastic, and we celebrated afterward with some of our closest friends. I absolutely could not have asked for more.

You know the phrase “calm before the storm”? That’s the proposal, and then there’s the planning.

I was only half done with my celebratory dessert when the questions began. Even questions from the most well-meaning friends and family made me feel overwhelmed. When? Where? What will you wear? Who will cater? How will you decorate? Colors? Themes? Open bar? Signature drink?

Of all the questions, one loomed largest for Seth and me as we began the planning process: how will we pay for it?

Financially, we were not a wreck. If there had not been a wedding on the horizon, our bank accounts would be in good shape. Part of the problem occurred because of our places in life. I work for a nonprofit; Seth was a college student, and will be again when he attends grad school this fall. Our parents aren’t wealthy, and they are generously giving what they can, but the majority of the bill falls on us.

Our commitment to budget goes beyond what we have in our bank account. I love my job in the Development department of a nonprofit. It’s a private high school for students from the urban core, students who would not receive a college prep education otherwise. Most will be the first in their families to go to college. Without education, their futures look bleak: the average family (about 4.5 people) brings in just over $25,000 per year.

And TheKnot.com reports that, on average, a wedding in America costs $27,800. Brides and grooms spend $2,200 more on one day than our students’ families earn in one year. That’s something to make you reconsider an ice sculpture, yes?

Between the two of us, Seth is the numbers guy. We knew we couldn’t afford much, but before planning could commence, we had to know what we could afford. With his mad Excel skills, Seth crafted an impressive spreadsheet with targeted values for each category.

As we began to put price tags on various aspects of our day, we quickly realized that we couldn’t have what the magazines and TV shows would call “the wedding of your dreams.” But that didn’t mean we could not have the wedding of OUR dreams. This paradigm shift has kept us focused as we navigate what can often be a dollar-sign-driven industry.

And a quick note to brides with a comfier budget: I don’t mean to rain on your wedding day. I only tell our story to offer context as to why we have chosen to stick to our budget. If you have the means to throw a big party, then enjoy every minute of it and feel no guilt. It’s your special day, after all!

In future posts, I’ll share Seth’s and my adventures as we plan a wedding on a tight budget, including venue, caterer, decor, save-the-dates/invites and much more. For those who are also on a budget, I hope that our trials, tribulations, stories and suggestions may help you plan one heck of a party without one heck of a price tag.

Fabric flowers are all the rage these days! I admit that I adore them, being someone who loves fabric and who also loves flowers. The best thing about these beauties is that many of them are simple to DIY which in my opinion, makes them a PERFECT wedding addition!

Below are some fabulous flowers from the always wonderful Martha Stewart Weddings. (I must stay – it would be sheer heaven to spend a day with the MSW staff…). What’s even better is that each of these specific flowers are ones that you can make yourself – in any color, in a variety of fabrics – to be placed just about anywhere on wedding day.

Love this dahlia! It looks great on a hair clip or headband, but I also think it would make a wonderful addition to a simple clutch, handbag, or tote. Find the how to here.

This collection of roses and peonies really adds something to this simple dress. Apply the same concept to your own. If you’re looking to save a few pennies, especially in the garment area, consider purchasing a super simple gown (or a white, cream, or ivory dress that isn’t technically a “wedding dress” at all) and add your own fabric flowers. Find the how to here.

This oversized peony screams “mod” to me. I don’t think I could pull off this large of a bloom on top of my head, but girl, if it works for you, go for it! I can’t decide if I’d like it better with a long gown or a tea length dress (or something shorter). Any thoughts?

Using the same patterns from above, you can create little gifts for your bridesmaids (flower girls, moms, or even favors for bridal shower guests) in the form of hair clips. Or, attach them to a headband or pin to be worn in a bit different way.

These are so sweet! I think these, in varying shades of the same color, would make a beautiful, everlasting bouquet….or corsage, or boutonniere, or just about a million other things!

A ring pillow with a big ole’ fabric flower, held by your ring bearer, might possibly be one of the sweetest things at your wedding ceremony. Find out how to make this particular pillow here.

Above I mentioned a few things these flowers can be glued or pinned to, but here is a recap with some additional ideas for where fabric flowers can be used.

- hair clips, bobby bins, head bands

- shoes – flats, heels, flip flops

- purses, bags, clutches, totes

- boutonnieres, corsages, bouquets

- ring pillows, baskets

- napkin rings, place card embellishments, centerpiece decorations

The list could go on forever!

If you have more uses for fabric flowers, please do share with us! Leave a comment or send us an email to weddingfanatic[at]gmail[dot]com. We’d love to hear from you and share your great ideas, too!

There is just something about chandeliers that fascinates me. Today, you can find them out there in almost any style from classic to glamorous, to shabby chic to just plain chic and modern.

So, looking for ways to incorporate chandeliers into your wedding? They don’t just need to be hung above the dance floor and tables (though we love that too)! First check out this FABULOUS event by artfool. I love the chic black and white and the event space, exposed pipes and all. The added chandeliers top everything off with a touch of modern elegance.

Or how about on your invitations? Check out this sample from Pomp & Circumstance’s Greenvites.

If you’ve already got your lighting figured out and your list of lights doesn’t include chandeliers but still want to work them into your decor, what about using this paper chandeliers as centerpieces or as other decor accents? We found this on Palindrome Press’s Esty Shop, but is sadly no longer in stock. Perhaps they would make a great DIY project; just grab some really heavy, large sheets of card stock and get creative!

And if you want to drape yourself in sparkly things just like a chandelier, you could always go the chandelier earring route. But! I think these are a bit more unique…and well, look more like they are an actual part of a chandelier. I saw this in a inspiration board from Snippit & Ink (which I posted about two posts ago!). The Neiman Marcus earrings come at a pretty high price, but they are oh so lovely! And surely you can find some other similar ones out there, with a much prettier price tag.

Who says you can’t carry the chandelier theme into your new life together?! I adore these pillow cases from modcloth.com. Fabulous! And while your there, check out the chandelier wall art. Why not?!

I think the nicest gifts you can give someone are handmade. Really, instead of sugar-coated almonds or little chachke you decided on in a panic, how nice would it be for your guests to give them something lovely, from the heart? Here, I’ve made a Dragonfly Box that is a great gift by itself or you can fill it up with your favorite treat! I will walk you through how I did it:

What you need: (I purchased everything at Michael’s )

1. Small Box

2. Ornamental Dragonfly or Butterfly

3. Ribbon (Martha Stewart has some nice ones!)

4. Glass Beads

5. Glitter

Glue

Scissors

1. Twist the included wire (on bottom of the insect) in the shape of a flat circle and glue to lid of box.

2. Cut enough ribbon to fit over lid of box. Trace the length of the ribbon with a small stream of glue and attach it to lid.

3. Put small dabs of glue inside lid and wrap ribbon so that the ends of the ribbon curl around the lip of the lid. Cut excess ribbon to look tidy. Let dry.

4. Put lid on box and use a pencil to trace where the ribbon will go on box. Cut and glue ribbon around the box to match up with markings so that the ribbon looks like it’s wrapped around the whole box (when lid is on).

5. Put a spot of glue on the center of the lid and add beads to it. Then put more glue around beads and add glitter, carefully shaking off any excess.

You can place your new gift box directly on top of place settings, which can add another decorative element to your tables!

I adore pumpkins – tiny and massive, whole or hallow, I love them all! And since autumn has recently begun and I’m seeing pumpkins EVERYWHERE, why not share these marvelous ideas with you!?

So where can you tie in pumpkins on your big day?! Here are just a few ideas.

Centerpieces :: There are so many things you can do with pumpkins, just on the top of your tables! Bring in large pumpkins and surround them with flowers. Carve them up a bit and fill with flowers or candles. Or, try incorporating mini pumpkins into arrangements or making arrangements completely from mini pumpkins (put them in a rustic basket and leave a few scattered around the table).

From Better Homes and Gardens’ 9 Fabulous Fall Centerpieces

Line the aisle :: Group pumpkins on the aisle-side of pews or rows of chairs. Pair with over-sized lanterns filled with candles or floral arrangements. Carve them up and let them glow to meet you as you walk down the aisle!

This pictures is from Fall Bio, a page on which you can find a lot of other fall-themed wedding ideas.

Monograms :: Carve (or have someone else do it for you) your monogram into the side of your pumpkins! Place them below and around the alter, on your reception tables, line the isle with them … put them everywhere (beware of overkill)!

Of course, these are from Martha Stewart’s Translucent Pumpkins . Oh I do love the things she and her staff come up with!

Place Card Holders :: Cut a tiny slit in the top of mini pumpkins and place them on the escort card table and/or use them as place card holders on the actual tables. Or, try sticking a wire in each one, stretched out to hold the little name cards!

These little pretties are from Ranasalame’s Flickr account. Love them!

On the Altar :: If your ceremony site allows flowers or other bits on the alter, consider placing a few pumpkins up there, along with any other memorial, decorative, or traditional floral arrangements.

The image is from Chicago Bride, though she seems to feel strongly about NOT using fall-ish items for fall weddings, but if that’s what you want – go for it. After all, the whole point of this post is “pumpkins”…and it’s kind of hard to not think of fall when I think of pumpkins. (But as a side note, we agree – just because your wedding is during the fall season does NOT mean you have to use oranges, browns, yellows and creams as your colors. There doesn’t need to be a single leaf, pumpkin, or a piece of wheat anywhere on your big day!)

Years ago I saw a episode of Martha Stewart where her guest was a women that made, yes made, all of her flowers…out of paper! She would make a few here and there when she had some time and saved them up. By the time the wedding day rolled around, she had completed all that she needed!

There is no reason, if you so desire, that you couldn’t do the very same thing! Or perhaps you like the idea but do not wish to deck out your entire day in paper flowers – simply apply where you feel necessary!

Looking into paper flowers? Start with the Paper Source. I simply adore the store, but in the paper flower department, they are a great resource.

I saw this fabulous post about shower favors on Perfect Bound. I LOVE the teacup candles. There is just something so elegant about good old fashion, girlie teacups! The idea originally comes from the Martha Stewart wedding crew (I won’t lie – I love almost everything they come up with!).
For the DIY bride, this would make a perfect project for a Saturday afternoon. Start collecting tea cups and saucers from thrift stores and yard sales (NOT from Grandma’s cupboards and shelves…even though that’s where all the good ones are!). Practice making a few candles (that wax is HOT) before you produce the “real deals”.

Once the candles have been used, you can turn that tiny treasure into something else that is useful and functional. My favorite idea also comes from Martha and Emily (Eco-Chic Bride): using the cups and saucers as containers to store or display your jewelry!
Like Emily also suggests, whip out that green thumb and put a little plant in it. Or, simply use it for a small centerpiece container full of flowers and/or greenery.
And if you’re really adventurous, perhaps during a post-wedding craft session you could attempt a teacup chandelier! The image below is in fact a teacup chandelier that hangs in Petit Four Cakes in Dallas.
