Blogs We Love : Snippet & Ink

You know those bits of inspiration that you don’t quite classify as “inspirational” when you first see them. And then your heart starts to beat just a bit faster and you start feeling a little giddy? Then you realize you can’t stop staring at whatever it is you’re looking at and you realize you have found something… well… something fabulous?

I find myself in these gazes of amazement when I’m clicking through the little piece of wedding inspiration heaven that is Snippet & Ink. In fact, I’ve probably drooled a few times…

Kidding. No drooling.

BUT! Snippet & Ink is undeniably full of delicious eye candy that I simply can’t get enough of. Here are a few samplings of the fabulousness!

Wedding Dresses : Retro to Modern

Vintage. Classic. Timeless. There is just something about [some] “old stuff” that I find irresistible. This especially holds true in the world and history of weddings. I saw a post over at Peonies and Polaroids about retro swim wear (which I really wish could come completely back into fashion) which has inspired this post. I hope you like it.

Fruity

Fruit - it’s delicious and nutritious. And even better? Fruit can give you some great decorating ideas for your wedding and reception (though, I seem to find fruity ideas fit into the reception category a bit more easily). So here are some things we’ve dug up to give you some “sweet” ideas.

1. Filling tall, slender glass cylinders with whole fruits then adding water is very visually pleasing. It would work especially well for a reception during daylight hours so guests can see them clearly.

2. Same idea, but cut the fruits in half or into slices. This works best with fruit that has a colorful inside, as well as its outside (think limes, lemons, etc). If you decide to go this rout, beware of fruit juice! Once you cut the fruit and place it in the water, it make leak juice into the water, making it cloudy and not-so-fabulous looking.

3. Try working fruit into a flower arrangement. Use them like you would a flower. They can be large and take up a lot of space, possibly saving you a few bucks here and there.

4. Place an arrangement of fruit in a nice bowl, glass container, or on a pedestal. Dress them up a bit by adding a few random flowers or leaves.

5. Give your guests that “just returned from the market” feel for a summer or spring fete by placing fruit in nice, coordinating baskets. You could then give the baskets away as favors or thank-you’s for those who helped out with the wedding.

6. And you can even tie your cake into your fruit-filled reception. Take the cake below as an example for a citrus-theme reception. Real fruit would probably cost you lest, but marzipan fruit can be used instead, to give your cake a little something extra.

Finding “The One” : Superstitions of the Past

Hello! I got a little book over the weekend with some fun little tidbits in it that I simply must share with you! (The book, “Just for the Bride”, is published by Parragon Publishing.) This first post is, as the title states, about some superstitions young ladies of the day believed would help lead them to their future husbands. Read on to see what you might have been told if you were searching for Mr. Right.

“On Christmas Eve, stand before the fireplace and gaze into the flames to see the image of your future husband.”

“If you love a man and want to know if he will propose, throw a nut into the fire and say his name. If the nut jumps, you’ll marry. If the nut doesn’t move, the relationship will have no spark.”

“You can learn the temperament of your future husband by plucking a piece of hay from a hayloft at midnight. A crooked piece foretells a surly man; a straight piece signifies a good-natured man.”

“In case you are lucky enough to be a bridesmaid, plant a spring of myrtle in front of the newlywed’s home. If it takes root, you’ll marry within the year.”

“Peel an apple in a single strip and toss the peal over your left shoulder. The shape of the peel will reveal the first letter of the name of your spouse to be.”

“Pluck some wild daisies from a nearby field and put the roots under your pillow to dream of your groom.”

“On All Hallows Eve, brush your hair three times in front of the mirror. If you glimpse a man standing behind you, wedding bells will ring before the year is through.” (I don’t know about you, but I find this one rather creepy)

“When attending a wedding, be sure to take a piece of groom’s cake home and put it under your pillow. That night the face of your future husband will appear in your dreams.”

Note: Traditionally, groom’s cakes were fruitcakes…thanks goodness times have changed!

If the groom’s cake bit doesn’t work, “soak your shoelaces in water until they are saturated. Then throw them against the wall to see the initials of your soon to be betrothed.”

Hope you enjoyed! I think these types of things are always fun. And, it’s always fabulous to see where some of the things we still do today came from. Share with us any traditions or superstitions you’ve heard of or your family still participates in!

Blogs We Love: Polka Dot Bride

I’ve been following her posts for a while now and I can proudly say, I’m obsessed! Ms Polka is ALWAYS posing great stuff, from what’s up with the wedding fashion world to inspiration bits to real wedding fabulousness! And another reason we think she is a must-read blog? She’s based in Australia, which makes her totally chic in my wedding book!

I love what she writes in her very first post,

Located in Australia, the options are somewhat harder to find, but when you find one it’s all the more fun! In this blog, I discover the unique, the stylish, the fresh and the quirky wedding ideas for Australian (and international!) weddings- most of all I hope to discover things that can make your wedding fun and about YOU!

A few of the posts we love (and find super helpful!):
ABC Of Weddings: L is for Lolly Buffet

Lolly Buffet

I must say, it’s one of the most helpful candy buffet planning guides I’ve seen. Ms Polka breaks down one buffet and notes specific glass containers that were used and where you can find them…AND how much they cost! She goes one step farther with a breakdown of candy by color, which is SO NICE if you’re planning a color-themed candy bar.

Another ABC Of Weddings: P is for Pew Decorations.

Church Pew Decorations

Sometimes completely overlooked, pew decorations will play a major part in whatever memory you have of walking down that aisle, and Ms Polka totally gives those aisles the attention they deserve! She has some GREAT ideas, which she lists according to season. Fabulous!

And lastly (only because I have to limit myself to three, otherwise I’ll be here all day):
Today’s post, Coloured Wedding Shoes

Colorful Wedding Shoes

Perhaps one of the reasons I love the Polka Dot Bride: I think she has a real knack for finding great shoes and writing fabulous shoe-related posts. And really, who DOESN’T love shoes?! This idea is wonderful and a great way to spice up your wedding day look.

Okay, that’s all the Polka Dot Bride you’re getting from me today. For more complete awesomeness, you’ll just have to check it out for yourself!

Trendy Yet Timeless : Lanterns

You see lanterns in a number of places, so why not think about incorporating them in to your wedding? Not only can they be found in a number of different styles, but they can serve multiple purposes; a decorative element and a lighting element. They can also be used in more than one place; for the ceremony and for the reception, making them a cost-efficient wedding purchase. Read on for some ideas!

For the idea of using lanterns in your ceremony, try hanging them from shepherd’s poles down the aisle or at the opposite ends of the rows of chairs/pews. Or, simply place them along the aisle on the floor, alone, or paired with floral arrangements, rose petals, or some other decorative element of your choice. With some good planning and great timing, you could have someone transport the lanterns from the ceremony site to the reception site to place around the dance floor, incorporate into the center pieces, or to place along the entrance of your reception space (or whatever else your creative mind can think up)!

For outdoor weddings and receptions, simply hanging the lanterns from large trees that project overhead can have a great overall affect (see the picture below).

Mix Tape : Feel Good Music!

So I am IN LOVE with something Ms Polka from the Polka Dot Bride discovered. Not only is it a fun little addition that can help us bloggers share music with all the wonderful brides out there, but it is something all the wonderful brides out there can put on their personal websites to share potential wedding picks with their wedding party and guests!

How so? Put it on your wedding blog or personal wedding page and play the selection of ceremony music. Or, play a few First Dance candidates and have guests vote on their favorite. Or, just add them to your site for a bit of ear candy.

In With the New: Banquet-Style Reception Seating

May 20, 2008 by Katie
Filed under Fashion and Trends, Wedding Planning

When you first imagine your future reception, how do you picture your seated guests? Around large round tables arranged in a particular order or pattern? That has indeed become the norm. But somewhat recently we’ve noticed the emergence of banquet-style seating; long, straight tables lined with chairs, table settings, and centerpieces.

Okay, okay, so the idea of banquet-style seating isn’t entirely new. Back in the day of kings and queens, surely it was the only way to party! And if you look at old photographs of large events, long tables that appear to go on for miles are frequent. But today, the style is definitely back. And for good reason, too!

Check out these old photographs:

Wedding Reception

Royal Feast

Some pros include:
-being able to fit more people around one table, of which you can fit into a smaller space
-depending on centerpiece choice, you may require fewer centerpieces, or, you might be able to spread them out and use a few smaller accents in addition to a main piece.

Some cons:
-guests generally only talk with the people directly to their left, right, and front
-guests might be seated closer together if tight on space
-depending on position, it’s very likely a good portion of your guests will have to turn their head to be able to see the dance floor, the cutting of the cake, etc.
